FARM INJURY FACTS AND STATISTICS

  • Agriculture has the highest rate of disabling injuries among all industries.
  • Farmers are 5 times more likely to be killed through occupational-related accident than workers in all other industries.
  • On average, 114 people are killed and another 1499 are seriously injured by farm-related incidents in Canada each year.
  • Since 1997 Alberta has averaged 19 deaths each year due to farm-related accidents.
  • In Alberta in the past 9 years, children aged 0-17 accounted for 19% of farm-related fatalities.
  • Since 1997 an average of 1489 farm-related injuries are seen in hospital emergency departments in Alberta each year.
  • Children aged 0-17 account for 15% of the farm-related injuries in Alberta
  • A recently published 12-year study by the Canadian Agricultural Injury Surveillance Program found the following costs for farm-related accidents:

The findings below were gathered through the Farm Accident Monitoring System.

Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development instituted (FAMS) to provide information on farm-related injuries and fatalities in Alberta.

Approximately 70% of the rural hospital in the province report farm-related injuries through the (FAMS) system.
